What exactly is the beauty of solitude? If we accept that by its very nature solitude allows our minds to be constructive and heal from the daily grind of modern life, then surely we can comprehend the benefits that such contemplative time provides. Solitude affects each person individually in their own way. But it is not to be confused with loneliness and the absence of connection with others. Finding peace with oneself, or at least allowing oneself the time and space to slow down and think for oneself - this is at the core of what solitude allows.
Through resilience and sheer grit, surviving the deepest, darkest days and months of the pandemic was the greatest feat for many. Being cut off from the proximity of others forced the unthinkable: solitude and silence. And sometimes loneliness. Yet now as those days and months and years are beginning to fade into distant memories of what life was like during such an unimaginable time, there is an aspect which may no longer feel awkward or unpleasant: embracing oneself in solitude. We are empowered in the knowledge that survival is possible when all systems are down. Relieving the mind from the burden of uncertainty, striving to make each moment count, each relationship matter. Deepening an understanding of what makes each one of us unique, and learning to accept who that person is. Finding ways to connect with nature, seek open space and return, if only for a brief time, to what could be found in that perilous time: the beauty of solitude.
